Oil claims center finds BP's records lacking

USA TODAY -- The claims facility now processing emergency payments for victims of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill inherited from BP thousands of languishing business claims, a jumbled database and hundreds of individual claims of loss with no documentation, independent claims administrator Ken Feinberg says.

Nearly three weeks after Feinberg took over the claims process from BP, it remains a logistical tangle of unpaid requests for help and missing documentation, while thousands of Gulf Coast residents and businesses wait for relief. Feinberg is pledging to move faster while also imposing new rules intended to prevent fraud.

Sport-fishing charter boat captain Mike Ellis, who works out of Cypress Cove Marina in Venice, La., says his boat engine clogged with oil and needed $5,200 in repairs. He filed a

DonK: you're right, they're in the petroleum business, but considering the overwhelming task at hand, it would have been easy for BP to do exactly that: go out and employ the best available people. Instead, BP tried to cut corners and do it internally. That's why it's such a logistic nightmare.

BP's not in the claims business. If you want an efficient and effective claims processing system, get help from an insurance company -- or maybe Mr. Feinberg -- they've already invented the wheel and figured out how to receive, review, process and resolve claims.

If you think it's easy, you probably have no relevant experience. If I wanted to process lots of small financial transactions, I'd engage a bank operations expert. There are many fields where relevant expertise is necessary.

How could one possibly expect people in the petroleum/energy business to set up a massive claims operation in less than 90 days and make everybody happy?

No, I'm not their apologist, just a fellow who has seen trained, experienced, skilled professionals mishandle situations because they were totally out of their realm of experience; I watched a bank in a crashing market back in '87. In our market, things got much worse than what I've seen reported in the media recently (i.e. 65% depreciation where people had borrowed 80% or more of apparent value just a few years earlier). They gave me rank and a title: "Capt. Don K., 505th Body Recovery & Burial Division". Seemed similar to working on the night shift at Auschwitz; be productive or...

I'm sure there are more good people working for BP than there are buffoons with unwarranted opinions who demonstrate the quality of thinking by posting arrogant, pithy, sarcastic, and unsupported assertions.

Difficult to distinguish between valid and invalid claims. Took me 7 months after Hurricane Ike to get an insurance claim on a damaged roof.

It seems the new processing of claims is not any better than BP's processing of claims.

You can always make a report say what you want as long as you shade it realistically. So there should be no surprise for anyone.

According to the report, some of the claims don't have any documentation to back up there claims. Sounds like there are going to be a lot of bogus claims.

ALL companies want profits, that's why they're in business. That said, BP pushed well beyond the moral & ethical limits and wanted profits at ANY COST... that's the difference.

Why are we always surprised by things like this. And they will find anyone that can will be filling a claim. I am in hopes that those that truly needed the help get it. Conservation keeps your money in your pocket.

BP never intended to pay out much at all.

The little guy will again suffer while the fraudsters with false claims will steal funds they don't deserve and the government appointee will be bogged down with paper work that can't be verified and claims that have gone astray.

Some people want something for nothing. Situations like this may make it bad for the people who really need this money because the greedy move in and get money they really don't deserve.

Many in the Gulf who experienced economic loss have a decision to make. Do they take a guaranteed immediate pay out now that may be much less than the actual loss, or do they sue, hope for a larger sum - with the knowledge they may never get anything, or wait many years to decades before seeing a dime.

Always seems like a few spoil things for the whole. A few greed people making false claims spoils it for the people the really need the financial help and gives BP an excuse to drag there feet.

shouldn't be a surprise? Well it is to me. I would have expected very close government oversight from the outset. But y'all don't trust government, eh? And oversight and regulation and accountability are socialist stripes, right?
